This book works really well for someone who knows little or nothing about the context of western art, but might be considered a bit wanting if you are looking to do some heavy duty research. This is a miserable excuse for art criticism. It looks like it was thrown together by an idiot who has only a superficial knowledge what to consider in a work of art. It also costs $70 and it doesn't have a SINGLE ILLUSTRATION!!!!!
"Art and Western Cultural Identity" is no H.W. Janson's "History of Art". Thank goodness for that! It's an easy, compact read, ideally suited, and likely intended, for the art history dilettante.
Although this surprising text lacks the usual photographic representations of the art it discusses, it has what no other text on the subject I have ever encountered lacks. It is interesting and engaging. Full of information in an accessible language and concise format presented in a cogent historical context and with a touch of humor as well, this text has everything the student needs to excel, assuming he/she has access to the images needed from the instructor or on line. Two thumbs up.
